Actions Impact Feelings

I’ve found that my emotions constantly change and I believe this is true for most all human beings. Even the smallest things in each day can make us react with a variety of emotions. One thing that I’ve been trying to put into practice is incorporating habits of happiness in my daily lifestyle. A statement from one of my favorite podcasts called, “Happier” with Gretchen Rubin stated, “Actions impact feelings.” When I first heard this so much clicked in my brain. It’s that connection between feelings, actions, and then behaviors that make us who we are.

Actions do impact feelings.

Self-care is so important when dealing with emotions. I know when I routinely practice self-care I gain so much peace and clarity in all aspects of my life. The actions of simply reading a book I love, taking a warm bubble bath, or going out to a favorite shop or cafe keep me grounded in who I am and how I am growing as an individual. I recently took myself to the movies on what I like to call a little “solo date.” I promise you it wasn’t sad to be a single college girl out by myself. In fact, it was quite liberating and gave me the space I needed away from my busy schedule. It also gave me a break from some hard feelings I’ve been struggling with on a personal level. I am not saying that taking yourself out on a “solo date” is going to change everything all at once, but for me it gave me the perfect amount of time to block everything else out and focus on myself. Take some time to think about who you are, what you like to do, and what your dreams are. Find something that will inspire you daily and help you grow as an individual.

I believe taking the action of self-care and loving yourself impact your feelings in an extreme way. Self-care also makes you responsible for how you feel. Loving yourself doesn’t mean you have to be selfish either. In fact self-care is so essential to loving others!  To love others, it’s so important to love yourself in confidence. Before you can truly take the action to love others, you have to put action towards loving yourself!

As christians we are called to be the light of the world, and I believe that taking care of your light is so important. So take some time for yourself. Meditate on God’s word alone and give yourself some space to pray and trust God with your everything. Your worries, your insecurities, your hopes and dreams, your fears? EVERYTHING. Make this a habit of happiness and incorporate it into your everyday lifestyle. I promise that daily prayer and bible reading will only be actions that will improve your feelings and behaviors.

I’ve found that keeping close ties with other christians is so essential in keeping your light shining bright. I get the majority of my inspiration from other christians that speak biblical truth in love. Taking the action to surround yourself with encouraging people can make a HUGE impact in how you feel which in turn creates positive and encouraging behaviors in yourself.

Also, let’s not forget that the world we live in is full of suffering people and chaos. It’s quite a huge mess, this world. It’s our job to make ourselves the light, but to also shine in this dark world. We are called my the Lord to be shining examples to others who do not know Him. I believe we spend too much time hiding our light from those that need it. It’s time to stop hiding and shine. I believe we also stay too comfortable and hide our light among other lights. Yes, gathering together with other christians for worship 3+ times a week is great, but let’s make sure we are taking that encouragement and true worship into the dark world that needs it. Let’s try to impact the feelings of those that need the Lord with our actions and with the power of prayer let’s reverse some worldly behaviors? It’s not an impossible task. Let’s make this world a little happier.
